Wine Shops

I am familiar with wine shops in Southern California, San Francisco, Boston, and New York.

Los Angeles

Wine Warehouse (Los Angeles)
Literally a warehouse just off the 405 right South of the 10, Wine Warehouse has a huge selection and an unpretentious environment. You won't get a whole lot of marketing and pizzazz, so if you need visual aids to help you decide what to buy, this place might not be for you quite yet. But you if do have specific bottles in mind, or if you need help narrowing down your selection, then the well-informed and accessible (albeit no-frills) staff will provide you with what you need. As it is a warehouse, markup virtually does not exist, so you're almost guaranteed to pay the fair market price for your wine. Having said that, some of the more obscure wine regions and varietals represented might be priced a touch higher than expected; chalk that up to the small price you pay for convenience of being able to buy in person a bottle that you would otherwise have to order online. I wish I could go back here more often. Unfortunately, every time I go, I end up leaving with so much more than I expected!

Best Buy (Camarillo)
Camarillo's only "real" wine shop

The Wine Closet (Camarillo)
I've given this shop three tries. All have disappointed me.
