A Glossary of Wine Terms!

Garrigue: term used to describe the shrub and brush plants ubiquitous across the Southern Rhone and Languedoc wine regions of France. In my experience, the term is most often used to describe wines that contain such herb notes as rosemary and thyme, as well as flowers such as violet and lavender. It is not uncommon for Grenache from this area to take on floral notes, and Syrah can offer an herbal component. One might also pick up notes of juniper and mint. The common Herbes de Provence blend (which includes marjoram and oregano) is not far off.
